Chandigarh, April 3
The Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Partap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday accused the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab Government of disregarding the Supreme Court’s guidelines to stop illegal liquor trade from the state.
“The Punjab government failed to comply with the SC guidelines and consequently, 21 people from different villages of Sangrur district died by consuming contaminated liquor last month. Meanwhile, the onus is on Punjab Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann because he holds the Home Portfolio and also Sangrur is a home district of CM”, Bajwa added.
Citing a news report, Bajwa said that the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice to the Punjab government asking why it failed to obey the guidelines of the Supreme Court that were laid down to stop the illegal liquor menace.
“The SC, last year, had directed the State of Punjab to continue steps to stop illegal transportation of spurious liquor and illegal bhatthis in the State. The SC had also said that the local police will continue to be responsible for ensuring it”, Bajwa added.
Senior Congress Leader Bajwa said that the Punjab CM was also making lame excuses about ending the drug menace in the state. He did nothing except issuing press statements and publishing advertisements on ending drug abuse in the state.
“Before Assembly Elections 2022, the AAP Supremo and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had vowed to end drug abuse within four months of forming the government in Punjab. Then in his Independence Day speech last year, the Punjab CM sought another year for the same. However, CM has failed to take a single step in direction even after seven months of his statement”, Bajwa added.
