Post May 31, those not clearing dues to face penalty
(Chandigarh Bureau) : With 2 days left to clear the Property tax without penalty and with rebate scheme, 75,473 of the total 1.42 lacs assesses are yet to pay the levy for the current finance year.
According to the records, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh had raised bills for the assessment year 2023-24 with a provision of rebate which is valid upto 31st May, 2023. Failing to deposit the payment within this timeline will invite 25% penalty and interest @ 12% per annum from the date of issue of the bill to the date of actual payment. In addition to that, action will be initiated in order to recover the arrears under Section 138 of the Municipal Corporation Act.
The MCC has calculated property tax for assessment year 2023-24 under clause 2 (ix) of the MC Property Bye-laws 2003 under Self Assessment Scheme and public notice as well as individual demand notices had further been raised for collection of Property Tax dues from 1.42 lacs assesses from which till date 54035 assesses in residential areas and 12492 assesses in commercial areas have paid their statutory dues of property tax.
Further, as per chapter ix clause 12 of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Solid Waste Management Bye-Laws 2018, a facility has been granted in respect of garbage charges if advance payment for user fee is made with property tax for entire year then amount of ten months will be charged instead of twelve months. Similarly, for six months advance payment, five and half months demand amount will be charged instead of six months. The same may be availed for the year.
The general public is requested to pay their respective property tax arrears on time and correctly declare their area along with usage of property as part of this Self Assessment Scheme.
